River and Dam Flyfishing
Flyfishing is offered in the Boshoekspruit and an earth
dam.
The upper Boshoekspruit flows through the farm for about three
kilometres. Its source, comprising twin streams, is about four kilometres
further up the gorge, and the water remains gin clear and very cold
throughout the year. Wild rainbow trout have been in the stream for many
years and are successfully procreating in the many gravel beds.
There are no concrete weirs, and water has been backed up a little here and there, creating holding areas by carefully positioning rocks from the stream, making it fishable for its entire length. The banks are mostly clear, with a few sections here and there having been left overgrown, surrounding some interesting pocket water.
The Boshoekspruit offers deep pools, fast riffles and runs, and slow
tail-outs with cruising fish looking for an easy meal. A 90-foot high
waterfall plunging into a deep pool filled with willing trout, marks the
top boundary.
The dam is about a hectare in surface area, and has
a two well-placed fixed wooden jetties. The object of the dam is to
provide challenging fishing with the opportunity for long casts and the
possibility of sized trout (rainbow,
golden and brown) over 7 lbs. The smallest fish is probably a little over 2 lbs The outstanding parameter is the depth (5 metres) which will enable fish to remain in the lower layers of cold water during summer days, rising to feed at sunrise and at dusk, as in the wild. Red trout was introduced in November 2002.
The winter dam temperature is 10 to 12 degrees, which is still conducive to trout feeding. The perennial stream feeding the dam rises in the Skurweberg Mountain with excellent water clarity and temperature.
Inflow is controlled ensuring that no flood waters enter the dam and consequently securing high quality water in the dam throughout the year.
